“Barbara” Vintage yacht of 1923 returns to the sea
On Saturday May 19th in Viareggio will be celebrated the long-waited Barbara’s return to the sea. The restauration of the vintage yacht started in 1998 at Astilleros Mediterraneo and was finalized at Cantiere Navale Francesco Del Carlo.
OFFICIAL LAUNCH
19th May 2018 in Viareggio will be held a gorgeous ceremony of boats and yachts where will be showcased the main highlight of the event, vintage boat “Barbara”, a wooden Bermudian yawl built in 1923 by the famous English shipyard Camper & Nicholsons to designs of one of the most important naval architect in the history, Charles Ernest Nicholson.
Thanks to the restoration work that included reconstruction of hull, deck, interior, plant engineering and rig sailing, Barbara has become one of the most beautiful vintage boats in all Mediterranean. 19 meters long yawl with bowsprit will fly a pennant of Associazione Vele Storiche Viareggio and is expected to take part in numerous races and regattas specially held for vintage yachts.
The event will represent the celebration of three anniversaries: 155th anniversary of shipyard Camper & Nicholsons, officially founded in 1863, 95 years of Barbara’s existence and 55th years of shipyard Del Carlo’s who is known in all Europe for the refitting dozens of vintage yachts.
HISTORICAL NOTES
Barbara built in teak and pitch pine with a framework in oak is a project number 318 constructed by the shipyard Camper & Nicholsons in Gosport in England in 1923. Important ex owners of the boat are English famous yachtsman Harold Francis Edwards, Barone Amaury de la Grange and Earl Robert-Jean de Vogue the General Manager of Moët & Chandon and creator of brand Dom Pérignon who remained owner of the boat till the sixties.
In 1982 Barbara has crossed Atlantic in windsurfing in 24 days.
In 1998 it was sent in Spain from Astilleros Mediterraneo for the restoration and subsequently transferred in Viareggio to the shipyard Francesco Del Carlo.
