Alfa Romeo 1900 SSZ Zagato chassis 01908: a significant history
An international competitive racing history, ranging from the 500 Millas Argentinas to the Mille Miglia.
The 1954 Alfa Romeo 1900 SS Zagato was designed specifically for racing, born from the vision of gentleman driver Vladimiro Galluzzi and Elio Zagato.
Featuring ultra-lightweight aluminum bodywork—with some examples distinguished by the famous "double-bubble" roof—only 39 units were ever built, making them highly sought-after by discerning collectors today.
In the 1950s, the 1900 sedan was renowned for its excellent mechanical engineering but lacked a truly lightweight, aerodynamic sports variant. Using the short-wheelbase chassis of the 1900 C Super Sprint (SS) as a foundation, the Milanese coachbuilder—under the direction of Elio Zagato—applied its philosophy of "lightness and speed" to create the extraordinary 1900 SSZ.
The 1900 SSZ competed in the most demanding races of the era, including the famous Mille Miglia, the Giro di Sicilia, and the Targa Florio.
THE STAR OF OUR FEATURE
The specific car featured here was originally sold new in Caracas, as confirmed by historical documents and Alfa Romeo’s archives. It subsequently passed through the hands of several owners—including renowned racing drivers who campaigned the car in high-speed events, showcasing its sporting pedigree with impressive results. It was entered in the historic Mille Miglia in 1955 and saw intense racing activity over the following four years, competing until 1959. According to Racing Sport Cars, the vehicle participated in the 500 Millas Argentinas in 1956 with driver Ruiz Lucero, the Cuban Grand Prix in 1957 (again with Ruiz Lucero), and the 4 Hours of Alamar in 1959 with Oscar Cabalen.
Following its active racing career, the car was imported to Italy in the 1970s and underwent an extensive restoration that was completed in the late 1980s. In the early 1990s, it was entered in the Mille Miglia, and today it resides in a private collection.
