Record-breaking sale for Pietro Frua's BMW 1600 GT coupè, 199.900€ - Ni-Cola Classics
This extremely rare example has travelled just under 9,000 km and belonged to the famous designer Pietro Frua
The BMW 1600 GT Coupé was designed by Pietro Frua, and the car featured in this article belonged to the famous designer. It was recently sold by Ni-Cola Classics for 199.900€, a record price after a white model achieved a hammer price of 150.000$ at an American auction Bringatrailer a few years ago.
The auction results demonstrate the significant rise in the value of the BMW 1600 GT, as it is a rare model that today attracts major collectors and investment funds, such as Timeless, which recently invested in a dark blue model and is now showing signs of continued growth.
ITALIAN DESIGN AND GERMAN ENGINE: BEAUTIFUL, FAST, AND RELIABLE
Beyond the refined "Italian" lines that make this car a "Ferrarina with a German heart," particular attention was paid to the engine, a 1600cc engine that delivers 105 hp from just 960 kg, with two twin-barrel carburetors and remarkable performance, a top speed of over 195 km/h and a 0-100 km/h acceleration of just 10 seconds. This was an impressive performance for its time, and some articles in German automotive magazines described it as not only fast but also boasting exceptional road holding, achieved thanks to its low weight, compact dimensions, and a well-designed front end with a set of stabilizer bars that allowed for high-speed cornering.
Today, there are around a hundred examples in existence. Collectors consider it one of the most interesting and rare cars of the 1960s. A worthwhile investment.
