Supporting programme with Schlitteda and Chalandamarz parades and COOP FIS Cross-Country World Cup
The 40th anniversary weekend of The Snow Polo World Cup is a celebration of tradition and top-
tier competition. On Saturday at 13:30, the spectacular Schlitteda parade will make its way through the Polo Village, where performers will take to the main stage to showcase their dances.
The Schlitteda is a cherished cultural tradition from the Upper Engadin, originally involving unmarried couples dressed in red and black Engadin costumes who gathered to organise a ceremonial ride on horse-drawn sleighs.
The excitement continues on Sunday with the convergence of two premier events: The Snow Polo World Cup and The Cross-Country World Cup. The highly anticipated 20 km freestyle races for men (12:30) and women (15:00) will kick off on the Snow Polo grounds, right next to the VIP tent. World-class cross-country skiers and top polo players will come together – only in St. Moritz!
In between the freestyle races, at 13:30 the Chalandamarz pageant will bring vibrant energy to the Polo Village. As part of this ancient tradition, schoolchildren from across Graubünden parade through villages with clanging cattle bells, cracking whips and singing songs to drive away the winter.
Excellent ice quality, perfect conditions for ponies and players
Lake St. Moritz is currently covered by more than 40 cm of high-quality ice, which continues to thicken. In addition, pleasant temperatures of around freezing point are expected in the Engadin at the weekend. These are the best conditions not only for the players and ponies, but also for a visit to the frozen Lake St. Moritz! As always, entry to the Polo grounds is free and in addition to the thrill of polo, the Polo Village will be offering an unrivalled range of culinary delights. Live musicians will also be on hand to create a memorable atmosphere.
The first of around 120 polo ponies have already arrived from various European countries. They will be able to acclimatise perfectly before the tournament and get used to the snow during their first exercise and light training sessions. The polo ponies will be shod with special horseshoes and rubber 'hoof grips' ensuring they will have perfect grip on the rolled snow surface during the competition.
