LANCIA 037 - CESARE FIORIO: A LEGENDARY COUPLE
Every car that has made history has a great driver, manufacturer or sports director alongside it.
CESARE FIORIO (Turin 1939) was all this for the LANCIA 037 (1982/83) two-door coupé, built by the Turin car manufacturer to compete in the World Rally Championship, the highest race for cars in this speciality.
The project, strongly supported by Fiorio, was born from the collaboration between Lancia, Abarth, Pininfarina and Dallara.
Four-cylinder in-line engine, 205 HP, over 220 km/h. It was also the last two-wheel drive car to win the world championship in 1983, competing with the Audi 4, which was very strong with its four-wheel drive and invincible.
“A memorable challenge”, as Fiorio still recalls, at the Monte Carlo Rally, partly on snow!!
Walter Rohrl was its daring pilot.
Cesare Fiorio was a skilled pilot with 18 world titles and a Knight of Merit of the Italian Republic.
"Race for Glory-Audi vs Lancia", the film of the year, narrates his long career. His legendary figure is played by Riccardo Scamarcio, and the film is directed by Stefano Mordini.
Cesare Fiorio also distinguished himself as a powerboat pilot, twice world champion and six-time European champion.
In 1992, he crossed the Atlantic Ocean with the speedboat "Destriero", with an unbeaten speed record.
A life truly like a movie, a race for glory.
