MORETTI 750 ALGER LE CAP: the last survivor of five
THE STORY OF GIOVANNI MORETTI
The manufacturer Moretti was established in 1920 in Turin by Giovanni Moretti, initially manufacturer of competition vehicles and motorcycles. In the late 20s still very young, he designed and manufactured his first car, with a small engine 500 cc, with an open bodywork and a rear-wheel drive authorized to carry 3 people. During World War II due to scarcity of fuel Moretti got inspired with the idea of producing a truck with an electric propulsion, Elettrocarro that will bring to electric car. In 1946 "Cita" which in Turin dialect means "small" was introduced into the market. Nowadays it is commonly called as city car. After a short time the engine of the car from 500 cc increased to 600 cc, from which derived 750 dual shaft, that allows these vehicles to take part in important races like Le Mans 24 hours and Mille Miglia.
In 1951 two great enthusiasts Veglia e Butti, driving two Moretti 750 participated in 1° Rally Algeri -Cape Town, completing 16.000 km through the whole continent, taking the first two places in their category. It was exactly this important accomplishment that allowed this manufacturer to enjoy an optimal reputation on international level, receiving particular interest from US market that was particularly interested in the little sport cars that were able to keep high position in the rankings of both local and international races. One year after Rally of Algeri in 1952, the equipment Piccoli - Albiero driving Moretti 750 Giardinetta started travelling around the world for 120.000 Km in 3 years, crossing 5 continents and putting the mechanics of the car under pressure. The challenge was successfully completed beating the world record of distance.
OUR PROTAGONIST
The car that we are going to talk about is the last of the 5 survivors. It is one of the extremely rare pre-series that was published on historical books and presented as the protagonist at the Turin Motor Show in 1954.
Compared with standard cars, which have been produced in just 200 exemplars, this version is different in some details that only experts of that model can notice. Such as a larger front emblem, aluminum steering box, flat tail-lights, four hole alloy wheels instead of five and a 30 hp engine comparing to 27 hp of produced versions. To date summing up the 5 pre-series examples and the 200 models of the definitive series, not more than 4/5 cars in the world are registered.
THE DISCOVERY
It's exciting to know that this car, that has been the protagonist at the Torino Motor Show, has such an unbelievable story. In fact once the war was over the car was sold in 1954 to the owner that died 4 years after, consequently the car remained unused under a shelter of a Como's villa for 50 years.
The discovery of that automobile happened 4 years ago when the heiresses of the owner decided to alienate the car during a visit of an antiquarian to the villa. The antique dealer found out this exemplar and he informed an enthusiastic collector about the car. The collector started the significant restoration of the automobile and turned the car into the masterpiece.
Value of a restored model pre-serie : 100.000 - 110.000 Euro
