Z for Zagato
There are only two famous Zs in the world: that of Zorro, the sword-tip signature of the fascinating fictional character, and the Z of Zagato, the logo of the great Italian coachbuilder.
In 1919, still amidst the languor of the often decadent Art Nouveau style, the Zagato style was born. On that date, an enterprising young man of humble origins, Ugo Zagato, opened his first workshop in Milan.
His school: the war (1915/18) and specialization in the processing of aluminum for military supplies at the important company Ing. Pomilio, an airplane factory during the war period.
Technological knowledge, the study of aerodynamics and the potential of materials led Zagato to the intuition of applying what he had learned to the nascent automotive industry.
Zagato's handcrafted bodies had a design that was already advanced for its time, and their shape magnificently expressed the function of the vehicle, plus they had an extraordinary lightness, due to the use of aluminium.
Ugo Zagato creates a new and unmistakable style with which he dresses the cars of the most prestigious Italian and foreign manufacturers.
From 1923 onwards, there was a succession of commissions, especially in the Gran Turismo sector. First, Alfa Romeo, the heart's home, then other large companies: Maserati, Lancia, Abarth, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin..
Characteristic of the Zagato car was the trademark "double hump roof" and the large windows.
It is an aggressive line from the tail to the front, but at the same time, it fluid and elegant, and highly expressive.
Zagato, in past decades and still today, has given the world highly prestigious bodywork, which is the pride of Italian craftsmanship.
