THE ALFA ROMEO ITALIAN REGISTER CELEBRATES 60 YEARS OF THE GIULIA COUPÉ IN BOLOGNA
The Giulia Coupé is one of the most iconic models in the history of Alfa Romeo: born in 1963, it flanked and then definitively replaced the Giulietta Sprint, the Biscione company's first accessible sports car.
Designed by a very young Giorgetto Giugiaro for Bertone, it remained in production until 1976: the Giulia Coupé was built in over 225,000 examples and in many versions, starting with the original Giulia Sprint GT, then followed by the GT Veloce and the more popular GT Junior. It made a leap up the category with the 1750 GTV and 2000 GTV, but the versions that have become legendary are the celebrated GTA, GTA Junior and GTAm, which for almost a decade dominated the competition scene in the Turismo category worldwide.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Giulia Coupé and its derivatives, but also the identical birthday of Autodelta, Alfa Romeo's official racing department, the Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo will display two important examples on its stand at Auto e Moto d'Epoca: the first is a Giulia GTA 1600 racing car, prepared by Autodelta and used in competition, with many successes, by one of the Alfisti's best-loved drivers: Ignazio Giunti. This example is in an exceptional state, in exactly the same condition in which it stopped racing over 50 years ago, perfect in operation and with only minor marks due to its age. The incredible historical value of the Giulia GTA ex Giunti is underlined by the fact that in 2022 it won the "best in show" award at the RealAlfa Conservation and Restoration Competition, organised by the Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo at the Museo Storico di Arese.
The second example of the Giulia Coupé is an early production Giulia Sprint GT. This is a car in 100 per cent perfect condition: for visitors it will be an opportunity to see a model up close that can be used as inspiration for possible restorations.
