International Hannibal Classic in Monfalcone, the programme of the seventh edition

The event in Monfalcone, which is also the first of the two events valid for the awarding of the Trofeo dei due Guidoni (the second is the Trofeo Città di Trieste, from 30 September to 1 October, organised by the Yacht Club Adriaco), is supported by the Marina Monfalcone, the Municipality of Monfalcone, CIVIBANK, the Udine-based wooden eyewear company W-eye, Armare Ropes, a manufacturer of technical nautical ropes, and GTS-Sports, an Austrian sportswear brand. The International Hannibal Classic is sponsored by the FIV (Italian Sailing Federation), the C.I.M. (Comité International de la Méditerranée) and the AIVE (Associazione Italiana Vele d'Epoca), which is also responsible for the measurement of the boats.
Two conferences on maritime culture will be organised at the Yacht Club Monfalcone. The first, entitled "International rule early boats", scheduled for Friday 8 September at 6.30 pm, will be held by Federico Lenardon, while the second, to be held on Saturday 9 September at 6.30 pm, will see Admiral Cristiano Bettini present "Scafi classici a vela - Il design per chi naviga" (Edizioni ETS), his latest literary effort. Federico Lenardon is a designer and Master Shipwright of the Cantiere Alto Adriatico Custom, and the only student admitted to the table of the well-known Trieste-based yacht designer Carlo Sciarrelli. He has worked on the restoration of countless yachts, among them the 6 Metre International Tonnage Onkel Adolph of 1907 and Margaux of 1911, the 7 Metre International Tonnage Hiawatha of 1910, the 17 metre ketch San Nicolò of 1925, the passenger transport Poto of 1925 and Galeb of 1936. He is the author of projects such as the dinghies Amelia and Feather 14', the 6.20-metre daysailer Barcolana 50, built for the 50th anniversary of the world's most popular regatta, and more recently Nababbo IV, a new 10-metre classic wooden cutter under construction at Alto Adriatico Custom that will start sailing in 2024. 
In the course of his career, Team Admiral (r) Cristiano Bettini has instead been Commander of the Frigate Grecale, the Destroyer Ardito, the Yawl Corsair II, with which he made two Atlantic crossings, until he held the position of Commander of the Livorno Naval Academy and that of Sub-Chief of the Defence Staff. Among the books already published by the Admiral are 'Beyond the River Ocean. Uomini e navi romane alla conquista della Britannia' (Roman men and ships at the conquest of Britain) and the three volumes of 'Come progettano i velieri' (How sailing ships were designed).
The event continues to be named after sailor Sergio Sorrentino (1924-2017), world champion in the Dragon class in 1958 in Sweden, winner of three European Championships (1953, 1956 and 1964), former Olympian and founder of the Hannibal Marina. It was here that the 'Tito Nordio', the first school of the Italian Sailing Federation, was born.
