Amerigo Vespucci sets sail for round-the-world voyage
The Amerigo Vespucci, the Navy's training ship, will sail around the world, sailing more than 40,000 nautical miles
What a spectacle on the quay of the port of Genoa! Fourteen beautiful vintage cars, examples of Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, paid tribute to the sailing ship "Amerigo Vespucci" of the Italian Navy, as it departed for a round-the-world voyage.
Historic masterpieces dialoguing with each other, telling profoundly different but equally compelling stories.
The Amerigo Vespucci is a historic sailing ship (the pride of our Navy) created in 1930/31 as a training ship for trainee officers of the Livorno Naval Academy and a frequent ambassador of Italian culture and know-how.
On July 1, 2023, she set off to redo the circumnavigation of the earth twenty years later.
This year it will be an ambassador of Made in Italy in the world. The display of historic cars was sponsored by the Karmann Ghia Club Italia.
The ceremony was attended by the ASI in the person of President Alberto Scuro, who presented the A. Vespucci with the ASI Certificate of Identity and the highest award: the Targa Oro.
The Karmann Ghia was a classic car of the Volkswagen brand that, in the early 1950s, in agreement with the Ghia coachworks in Turin, presented a variant of the world-famous Beetle. The model was designed by Mario Felice Boano from Turin.
Happy voyage to the Amerigo Vespucci and its cargo of Italian creativity!
