LANCIA FLAMINIA 335, fot the President
The 60th anniversary of a 'regal' car in the panorama of high-class Lancias
Always up to date and in honorary service is the Flaminia type 335, the 'presidential' version of Lancia's flagship, born in 1956/57.
Only five examples were built in 1961, at the request of the then President of the Italian Republic, Giovanni Gronchi, on the occasion of the visit to Rome of Queen Elizabeth II of England.
Four of the convertible versions of this luxury limousine have remained at the disposal of the Quirinale as official cars on special occasions: visits by heads of state and sovereigns, the Italian Republic Day parade and other occasions. The fifth was donated to Queen Elizabeth II and there is reason to believe that it is still owned by her.
The Lancia Flaminia, named after the ancient Roman consular road, was presented in 1959 at the Turin Motor Show in the cabriolet version, which bore the signature of Giovanni Michelotti, coachbuilder Vignale.
Because of its blue colour, it was christened "luce di mezzanotte" (midnight light); a prototype in a single example, it had a slender line, hint of fins at the rear, horizontal grille on the front. The 1961 examples were designed and built by Pinin Farina, a 4-door, 7-seater cabriolet with Connolly 8500 leather upholstery, telephone, hard canvas top. This car in 1965 transported the much applauded presidents: Giuseppe Saragat for Italy, Charles De Gaulle for France, to the inauguration of the Mont Blanc Tunnel.
