ARONA STRESA ARONA 1897-2021: GREAT SUCCESS FOR THE OLDEST ITALIAN CAR RACE
A bright day, welcomed on the enchanting scene of Lake Maggiore, 27 historic cars strictly produced before 1925, with the exception of sports cars up to the '30s
The historical commemoration of this year was more fortunate than the first glorious race, which took place on September 12, 1897, along a route of 35 km, on roads then unpaved along the shores of the lake. After the departure -it is said- a violent storm hit the participants, forcing some of them to retire.
One hundred and twenty-four years later, the celebratory event recorded an extraordinary presence of public, who waited jubilantly for the veterans of motoring, including the sumptuous Lancia 12 hp Alfa 1908, the first model of the Turin House of the collector Corrado Lopresto; the Theta 1914, the Renault Voiturette Type C 1900 belonged to the same Louis Renault; the monumental Detroit Electric 1924, the slender Fiat 501 C; the British sports Riley 1936 branded OldCar24, and many others. The passionate participation and the interest of people, including many tourists, for these beautiful vehicles, the result of visionary projects and entrepreneurial courage, have placed this event among the most significant of the period, not only in Italy but in Europe.
The Arona - Stresa - Arona has all the credentials to become the Italian "London-Brighton (1896)", due to the rarity of the cars and the elegance of the competitors, who dressed in period clothes in keeping with the style of their cars. In 1897 these cars, entirely handmade, represented an absolute novelty of the rising motorization; today they are admired not as a folkloristic object, but as a precious testimony of the beginning of a technological path always in progress. The presence of many young people in the audience bodes well.
The organizers of the event are also young, enthusiastic about their commitment and confident in the future. They need space to grow, invent and renew with the fervor that characterizes youth.
For the happy conclusion of the event, the organizers, Alessandro Ciapparelli (Head of the event and collector of historic cars) and Maurizio Cavezzali (President of the organizing committee of the Rievocazione Storica) thank the Forces of Order and in particular the Carabinieri who with exemplary professionalism and sympathy, ensured everyone an atmosphere of tranquility, so rare these days.
