1O0O MIGLIA 2021: the restart edition
The most important event of the year for classic car enthusiasts is, as always, in Brescia
Preceded by a passage of the Frecce Tricolori, at 13.30 on Wednesday 16 June, another Italian pride got underway: the 2021 edition (no. 39) of the 1000 MIGLIA, the most famous regularity race for classic cars in the world, which in 2023 is a candidate to become a Unesco heritage site. We could easily define this year's edition as the "1000 MILES restart", after last year's edition which took place in a surreal atmosphere, on a dreary October day, with very few spectators attending due to the second wave of the ongoing covid pandemic.
This year, we could feel the desire to start living in freedom again, looking to the future with optimism. And the 1000 MIGLIA did not escape this feeling either, with its 375 registered cars ready to cover the 1600 kilometres of the race, in this edition to be covered anti-clockwise: that is, from Brescia heading towards the Tyrrhenian coast instead of the Adriatic. This will lead the crews to face, unlike in previous years, the challenging climbs of the Cisa Pass on the first day, and those of the Futa and Raticosa on the way back.
Some numbers for the statistics lovers: Alfa Romeo is the most represented brand with 50 cars participating, followed by Fiat with 40 and Lancia with 31. As far as drivers are concerned, after Italy with 292 drivers present, the highest number of participants comes from the Netherlands (146) followed by Germany (80).
Among the VIPs present will be John Elkann, President of Stellantis and Ferrari, accompanied by his wife Lavinia Borromeo, on board the 1956 Alfa Romeo 1900 C Super Sprint with the number 300.
As a side event to the official race, again this year 100 Ferraris built after 1957 will take part in the "Ferrari Tribute" starting from Desenzano del Garda. Also as a side event there will be the "1000 Miglia Green", a selection of electric cars that will drive along the official route in the name of sustainability.
On the day of the start, Brescia is transformed from a busy Lombardy city into the capital of classic cars and the glamour that such an environment brings with it: there are numerous rare pieces, and the idea that they can be seen up close and touched (with almost religious respect) is priceless for an enthusiast! And this is what makes the 1000 MIGLIA, as Enzo Ferrari said, 'the most beautiful race in the world'.
