SERGIO SCAGLIETTI: THE SCULPTOR OF DREAMS
A name that evokes the golden age of Ferrari.
Sergio Scaglietti, from Modena, was a very young master craftsman who repaired and restored the broken wings of racing cars as a true professional. The master builder is a sculptor of metal. He has the ability to shape sheet metal and bend it to create all the internal and external components of a vehicle. Requiring a great deal of practice and intelligence, the craft has all but disappeared today. Scaglietti sensed the possibility of using his skill to transform an element with the function of a splash guard and axle guard into an element with an aerodynamic function, reshaping its shape with a hammer blow. The bodies, under the hand of the brilliant craftsman, acquired a new profile bordering on a new aesthetic. Enzo Ferrari, who became a friend and later a client of Scaglietti's, noticed this when he founded his own Carrozzeria half a century ago.
Linked to the house of Maranello, he designed some of the most famous Ferraris of the second half of the 20th century, including the legendary 1958 250 Testa Rossa with its hand-beaten aluminium body. With only 34 examples produced, the Testa Rossa is one of the most prized cars on the collector's market, along with the Ferrari 250 GTO, created in collaboration with Giotto Bizzarrini (chief engineer of the house of the Cavallino) and considered by many to be the most beautiful Ferrari ever and one of the best sports cars of the period. It won the Le Mans 24 Hours race three times, 1958-1960-1961.
In 2019, the Ferrari 250 GTO was given the title of a work of art and, as such, is under copyright protection. These splendid masterpieces of mechanics and style have entered the most prestigious collections, to the tune of tens of millions of dollars at international auctions, and the most exclusive private garages.
