DELOREAN DMC-12: THE TIME AND DREAM MACHINE

The dream was the American dream, the motive of the film trilogy of the 80s and 90s, produced by Steven Spielberg: "Back to the Future". The perfect dream car for a virtual journey between past and future was the DeLorean DMC-12, a vehicle that even in the unmodified version for the film seems to have come out of Leonardo's imagination, for its unpredictable opening of the doors that rise like bird's wings taking flight. The bodywork, made of shining stainless steel, is "seagull's wings". This model dates back to 1952, presented by the German car manufacturer with the highly admired Mercedes Benz SL and imitated by other manufacturers. The DeLorean DMC -12(1978/1982) is Giorgetto Giugiaro's interpretation of it for Italdesign. The engineering part is due to Colin Chapman; the engine is a PRV V6. Giugiaro also designed the De Tomaso Mangusta car for the Ghia body shop in Turin, in which the device opens the bonnet of the engine with seagull wings. Preceded by the sensational Alfa Romeo Carabo for Bertone in 1968, the splendid Lamborghini Countach (1974) by Marcello Gandini presents the doors that open like scissors with a spectacular effect.
