QUEI TEMERARI DELLE STRADE BIANCHE: NUVOLARI, VARZI, CAMPARI..
It is the title of a small precious exhibition set up, until 29/9/2020, in the Complesso Monumentale of San Francesco in Cuneo
Curated by Giosuè Boetto Cohen, it celebrates the 90th anniversary of a famous sporting event, the legendary "Cuneo-Colle della Maddalena 1930" race. Through the admirable images taken by the photographer Adriano Scoffone, portraitist of the best company in Cuneo, who then became an exceptional photojournalist, we see the faces of the protagonists of the race (and of those 1925, 1926,1927) pioneers of car racing in the years between the two world wars . Taken from photographs on plate, ingeniously and painstakingly taken at strategic points of the arduous route, they allow the visitor to relive those exciting moments of the race and to assess the risk that the drivers faced on the racing cars of the time, small single-seater or two-seater racing cars, extraordinary first creations by engineers and coachbuilders, to challenge time and space.
Speed, a myth of the time. "Daring" yes, but they were men like Tazio Nuvolari, the fabulous driver from Mantua, Hans Stuck, the fascinating German champion, Achille Varzi, Giuseppe Campari, Ernesto Maserati and many others. The challenge was to run, even at 130 km/h, On "white" dirt roads, between splashes of mud and a hail of stones ...... and win.
Three beautiful vintage racing cars can be admired on display, under the high Gothic vaults of the church: the 1930 Alfa Romeo P2, red with the green four-leaf clover, the Alfa Romeo 1500 MM S, and the blue Bugatti 35 B , from 1929.
Mechanical jewels, entirely hand-modeled by skilled plate-beater craftsmen. Without bothering Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, we can say that they are "at least" as beautiful as the Nike di Samotracia!
