Alfa Romeo 2000 Touring Spider (1957-61)
History and technical notes
Alfa Romeo 2000 Touring Spider, bodied by Carrozzeria Touring Milano and destined to European and US markets made its debut in 1957 at Turin Auto Show. Two models of the vehicle were presented. The car was equipped with an 1.975 cc berlina engine, with some variations that influenced the performances. The mixture of a pair of side draft Solex carburetors and a higher compression ratio enable the engine to develope a maximum output of 115 hp and a top speed of 175 km/h. It should be noted that the Gearbox was 5-speed manual. 3497 examples of above-mentioned car were produced from 1957 to 1962. It was more successful than the Berlina model. The 2000 Spider was constructed on a chassis of just 22 cm shorter than berlinas one, (4,49 meters against the 4,71 of berlina). The car body was designed by Roberto Bonetto, a Touring designer, who gave the automobile its elegance through a low front, a central shield, two horizontal air intakes, two-piece bumpers, a bonnet with small air intakes and a very nice tail with a particular design taken from Maserati Vignale Spider. At that time as an optional there were a Nardi steering wheel, wire wheels Borrani and hard-top. In 1963 Alfa Romeo 2000 spider was replaced by 2600 Spider, still bodied by Touring.
