FROM THE GNOMON TO THE WRISTWATCH
The watch is an inanimate object, however its mechanical heart beats regularly. For this function we give it an intelligence and even a soul.
We love our watch almost as much as our dog, which instead has a real heart and is unconditionally faithful to us. We also ask for loyalty to the watch, which in this case is THE PRECISION. We demand it "absolute" to satisfy all the needs of current, daily or sports life. A good watch should never betray us. This is the reason why we rely on the best watchmaking production. When life was slow, to know the passing of time was an intuitive fact. People observed the position of the sun in the sky, the inclination of its own shadow, they heard the song of the cock; the first natural sounding alarm. In already technological times, the tolling of bells marked the hours, aimed above all at the soul. Jumping in one go from the gnomon to the hourglass, we quickly proceed to the sophisticated pendulums from the silvery tinkling, which throughout the 19th century was in the pocket of the wealthy bourgeois, with the “golden chive" tied to his chain. The breakthrough, the mutation in the DNA of the clock occurs in conjunction with another great technological invention, the AIRPLANE. Louis J.Cartier, the French jeweler watchmaker, meets Alberto Santos-Dumont, a famous aircraft designer and one of the fathers of aviation. To pilot his 14 bis, which is the 1ST motor plane in history, he doesn't need a pocket watch, because he must have his hands free. In 1904 Cartier designs the first men's wristwatch, which will become famous as its famous owner and it will be produced since 1911. This simple practical solution will be crucial to synchronize the artillery and infantry in war, reason why it was provided to all armies. Practicality, synchronization, exact time measurement: a continuous progress in the design of the watches of the big brands that have written the history of this indispensable tool for the professional sportsman, the diver, the astronaut. Beyond man, the most perfect watch of all times, the ATOMIC CLOCK, is about to reach cosmic space. On the wrist of the movie stars, of the fictional heroes of the fantasy, the high-class clock takes on the status symbol value and it’s an element of male seduction. But it is the great quality of the design and the manual work that makes these objects unique, precious and desirable.
