HEUER MONACO: THE NAME, THE IMAGE, THE MYTH
Roland Barthes wrote that myth is a value.
Today, more than ever, it's an age in which it's enough to say "Le Mans" or "McQeens", to see a Porsche 917 K, or an extraordinary HEUER MONACO wristwatch chronograph, objects admired by enthusiasts and coveted by collectors.
The added value of the myth that sorrounds the most famous actors and movies is superimposed on the intrinsic qualities of these high-tech artifacts.
Of the reckless actor-pilot Steve McQueen there are now only the almost legendary images and the words "Heuer Monaco" embroidered on the white pilot's suit, in the 1971 movie "Le 24 Ore di Le Mans". A movie that made the watch he displayed on his wrist famous, produced by the Swiss company founded by Edouard Heuer in La Chaux-de-Fonds. This square-shaped timepiece is still at the forefront in sports chronographs and especially for motor racing drivers. It is said that the actor used four timepieces during the shooting of the movie. In 2012 one of them, was auctioned for 799.500 $, including the commission.
