LUXURY, ART AND TECHNOLOGY OF OTHER TIMES

At the "Leonardo da Vinci" Museum of Science and Technology in Milan you can admire the Astrario, an astronomical clock, which indicates the time, the annual calendar, the movement of the Sun and the Moon. The time of sunrise and sunset are indicated for each day, and the "Sunday letter" determines the succession of the days of the week and the name of the fixed holidays of the Church and the Saints.This object, of refined workmanship, is not the medieval original, which was destroyed, but a reconstruction, which was possible to create thanks to the handwritten description of its maker.It was rebuilt/reconstruct in 1963 and exhibited in the Watchmaking Section of the museum. Giovanni Dondi was born in Chioggia (province of Venice) around 1330, and he was the inventor, physician, astronomer, philosopher, poet and friend of Petrarca.
